I Ching Interpretation

Symbolism & Structure

The Lu hexagram has Dui (Lake/Yielding/Joyful) as the lower trigram and Qian (Heaven/Firmness/Power) as the upper. The image is of a gentle, joyful person (Dui) following and serving a powerful, hot-tempered person (Qian). This is a dangerous situation, but if one knows how to behave (tread), keeping proper distance and etiquette, one will not only remain safe but also achieve one's goal.

Philosophy & Virtues

The philosophy of the Lu hexagram teaches the Way of Conduct: 'Treading means propriety.' Living in this world, one must know who one is and where one stands. The distinction of hierarchy is not for discrimination but to keep order in society (Heaven above, Lake below). When facing difficulties or powerful people (the tiger's tail), a sincere and proper attitude will help you tread through danger successfully.

Line by Line Analysis

1st Line

1st Line: 'Simple conduct. Progress without blame.' Treading with simplicity. When starting out or in a low position, live true to your nature; without pretense or flattery, you will find peace.

2nd Line

2nd Line: 'Treading a smooth, level path. The quiet perseverance of a dark man brings good fortune.' Keeping a middle path, undisturbed by external fame and wealth, makes the road of life broad.

3rd Line

3rd Line: 'A one-eyed man can see, a lame man can tread. He treads on the tail of the tiger. The tiger bites him. Misfortune.' A one-eyed man wanting to see far, a lame man wanting to run fast. A warning against arrogant, incompetent people who dare to stroke the tiger's whiskers; they will surely be bitten. The most unfortunate line.

4th Line

4th Line: 'He treads on the tail of the tiger. Caution and circumspection lead in the end to good fortune.' Treading on the tiger's tail but with fear and extreme caution. Healthy fear keeps you alert to handle situations, eventually overcoming danger.

5th Line

5th Line: 'Resolute conduct. Perseverance with awareness of danger.' Resolute action but always remembering the danger. Even in the highest leadership position (Qian), if you act dictatorially without the caution of Lu, you will face hardships.

6th Line

6th Line: 'Look to your conduct and weigh the signs. If all is complete, supreme good fortune comes.' Reviewing the path traveled, carefully examining the consequences. If everything from beginning to end was proper, you will receive complete blessings.

Divination & Guidance

Work & Affairs

You are facing a difficult task or a difficult boss. The key to success is tact and compliance with rules. Do not try to act smarter than your guide.

Morning Advice

Pay attention to your attitude and words when communicating with superiors or clients. A little humility will help things go smoother than expected.

Love & Relationships

The relationship needs mutual respect. Do not be so overly intimate that you diminish the other person's value. Men need to show politeness, women need to maintain self-respect.

Dau Nam

A year to 'tread lightly and speak softly'. You will have many occasions to interact with high-status people. Take advantage of this by learning their manner and rules of conduct.

Career & Success

You may be assigned dangerous responsibilities or work directly with the board. This is a double-edged sword: if done well, advancement is fast; if careless, you will be weeded out.

Wealth & Business

Wealth is obtained through compliance with laws and tight contracts. Avoid 'under-the-table' or law-bending deals, because the 'tiger' of the law will not spare you.

Health & Well-being

Be careful with accidents involving limbs or travel. Additionally, stress from 'dealing' with external circumstances can affect the nervous system.

Luu Y Dac Biet

The Lu hexagram teaches: fear (caution) is the companion of success. One who does not know fear is the first to be struck down by the tiger's tail.

Strategic Insights

Risk Analysis

The risk is 'overconfidence' (3rd line). When you think you have mastered the situation and start ignoring the rules, that is when disaster strikes.

Strategy

If you do the opposite (being disrespectful or rule-breaking): you will lose all quality relationships. In any system, those who do not follow the 'rules of the game' will be eliminated immediately.
