Symbolism & Structure

The Bi hexagram has Kun (Earth/Nourishing) as the lower trigram and Kan (Water/Danger) as the upper. Although Kan (danger) is above, it is supported by Earth (Kun) below. The image of water flowing on the ground, pooling in depressions, represents seeking like-minded people to assemble. This hexagram follows the Shi hexagram: after establishing discipline (Shi), one must use mutual affinity and closeness (Bi) to sustain durability.

Philosophy & Virtues

The philosophy of the Bi hexagram teaches: 'Holding together brings good fortune. Inquire of the oracle once again whether you possess greatness, consistency, and perseverance. Then there is no blame.' Unity is good, but you must examine yourself to see if you have the long-term virtue (constancy) to inspire trust in others. In particular, there is a warning: 'Those who come too late meet with misfortune.' In alliances, the hesitant, opportunistic latecomers who join only after everything is settled will not be trusted and are easily weeded out.

1st Line: 'Hold to him in truth and loyalty. This brings no blame. Truth like a full earthen bowl brings unexpected good fortune in the end.' Sincerity like a full wine jar brings unexpected good things.

2nd Line

2nd Line: 'Hold to him inwardly. Perseverance brings good fortune.' Bonding from within, keeping upright is good. This is connection based on sincerity of consciousness, not external interest.

3rd Line

3rd Line: 'You hold together with people who are not the right people.' Warning against choosing the wrong allies or associating with men of low character, leading to regret.

4th Line

4th Line: 'Hold to him outwardly also. Perseverance brings good fortune.' Associating with the right leader (5th line) while remaining upright. Seeking strong partners to rely on is wisdom.

5th Line

5th Line: 'Manifestation of holding together. The king uses three beaters at the chase, and loses the game that runs off in front. The citizens need no warning. Good fortune.' The king hunts by enclosing only three sides, leaving an escape path. Unity without coercion; let those who want to leave go. Voluntary association creates the most durable strength.

6th Line

6th Line: 'He finds no head for holding together. Misfortune.' Joining together without a proper beginning (or without a worthy leader) brings misfortune. Shallow unity without a core collapses in a storm.
