I Ching Interpretation

Symbolism & Structure

The Shi hexagram has Kan (Water/Danger) as the lower trigram and Kun (Earth/Nourishing) as the upper. A potential block of danger (water) is surrounded by the yielding nature of the earth. This is the image of the army: disciplined and calm on the outside (Earth) but holding great destructive power within (Water). Kan below also represents the dedication and strategy of the general.

Philosophy & Virtues

The philosophy of the Shi hexagram teaches: 'The army needs perseverance and a strong man. Good fortune, no blame.' Directing troops requires a righteous cause (perseverance) and a commander with virtue and experience (a strong man). The army is a dangerous tool, to be used only as a last resort. If used out of greed or belligerence, the result will be disaster for the nation. Leadership in this hexagram is not through fear but through absolute trust in the common goal.

Line by Line Analysis

1st Line

1st Line: 'An army must set forth in proper order. If the order is not good, misfortune threatens.' The army must have discipline from the start. If discipline is loose, no matter how many troops there are, defeat is certain. The beginning of any organization requires strict rules.

2nd Line

2nd Line: 'In the midst of the army. Good fortune, no blame. The king triple-decorates him.' The general is in the midst of his army, loved by the troops and trusted by the king, receiving rewards three times. This is the governing line, showing integrity and masterly execution.

3rd Line

3rd Line: 'The army carries corpses in the wagon. Misfortune.' An army with too many commanders (or carrying corpses home) is unfortunate. A warning about overlapping power or complacency leading to failure.

4th Line

4th Line: 'The army retreats. No blame.' The army retreats to the left. Knowing your own strength, retreating to preserve forces when victory is impossible is a wise move, no blame.

5th Line

5th Line: 'There is game in the field. It furthers one to catch it. No blame. Let the eldest son lead the army. The younger son carries corpses; perseverance brings misfortune.' Wild beasts enter the field; driving them away brings no blame. But if you use incompetent people (younger son) to lead, even with a righteous cause, disaster will follow.

6th Line

6th Line: 'The great ruler pronounces his commands, defines states, and awards families. A man of low character should not be employed.' After winning, the king rewards and grants titles. But under no circumstances should untrustworthy or low-character people be employed in the post-war administration.

Divination & Guidance

Work & Affairs

A great matter requiring the mobilization of many people and resources. You must act as the coordinator. Establish processes and discipline from the start to succeed.

Morning Advice

Make a clear work plan. Do not let trivial tasks distract you from the main goal. Self-discipline is the keyword for today.

Love & Relationships

The relationship needs seriousness and responsibility. There may be interference or influence from families (the crowd). Agreement on perspectives is needed.

Dau Nam

A year of organization and carrying great responsibilities. You may lead a project, department, or business. High pressure but the results will be very sustainable.

Career & Success

Very good for those working in the military, police, or HR management. You have opportunities to prove your leadership. Be fair in rewards and punishments.

Wealth & Business

Wealth comes from large-scale, collective business activities. No room for individual luck. Manage cash flow closely; avoid losses due to lack of supervision.

Health & Well-being

Beware of diseases related to kidneys or the excretory system (water in the earth). Additionally, work pressure can easily cause stress and exhaustion.

Luu Y Dac Biet

When holding power (the Shi hexagram), remember: 'A man of low character should not be employed.' Do not put incompetent people in important positions due to personal feelings.

Strategic Insights

Risk Analysis

The risk of the Shi hexagram is autocracy and abuse of power. When the army is too strong but lacks a righteous cause, it becomes a tool of destruction (3rd and 5th lines).

Strategy

If you do the opposite (loose, undisciplined): the organization will collapse immediately upon facing difficulties. The Shi hexagram teaches that a small but disciplined army is better than a chaotic crowd.
