I Ching Interpretation

Symbolism & Structure

The Pi hexagram is the exact opposite of the Tai hexagram. The upper trigram is Qian (Heaven) and the lower is Kun (Earth). Heaven and Earth return to their physical positions but are energetically distant. This is a symbol of misunderstanding: the boss does not listen to employees, husband does not understand wife, will cannot overcome reality. The division of Yin and Yang creates a stagnant, decaying environment.

Philosophy & Virtues

The philosophy of the Pi hexagram teaches behavior during times of decline: 'The way of the inferior man increases, the way of the superior man decreases.' When moral values decline and inferior men hold power, the superior man should not stand out and fight, as it will only bring disaster. The best way is to 'recess one's virtue to avoid harm' (hide talent). Pi is a lesson in patience and perseverance in the dark.

Line by Line Analysis

1st Line

1st Line: 'When sheargrass is pulled up, the sod comes with it. Perseverance brings good fortune and success.' Pulling grass roots. Similar to Tai, but here it means pulling each other back into retreat to maintain integrity. Unite to protect oneself in bad times.

2nd Line

2nd Line: 'They bear with us. Good fortune for the inferior man. Stagnation for the great man brings success.' Inferior men flatter to rise; the great man bears stagnation, but his mind is free. A choice between short-term benefit and long-term honor.

3rd Line

3rd Line: 'They bear shame.' Inferior men behave shamefully and openly; the upright person must endure humiliation.

4th Line

4th Line: 'He who acts at the command of the highest remains without blame. Those of like mind share the blessing.' A divine command (times begin to change), no blame. Like-minded people start to assemble to prepare for change.

5th Line

5th Line: 'Stagnation comes to an end. Good fortune for the great man. "What if it should fail, what if it should fail?" Thus he binds it to a cluster of mulberry shoots.' The great man finds fortune, but must constantly warn himself: 'It is lost, it is lost!' to maintain vigilance as if tied to a strong old mulberry tree. Stagnation begins to dissolve.

6th Line

6th Line: 'Stagnation is overthrown. First stagnation, then joy.' Obstruction is overthrown. After a long period of hardship, joy arrives. The law of 'things turn into their opposite at the extreme' is fulfilled; the time of Tai returns.

Divination & Guidance

Work & Affairs

Very difficult, stagnant. Nothing progresses; obstacles come from all sides. Do not try to push actions now, as it will only be wasted effort.

Morning Advice

A tiring day, communication is blocked. You easily meet unreasonable people or run into toxic work environments. Keep work to a minimum and stay quiet.

Love & Relationships

Coldness and distance prevail. The two sides cannot find a common voice. Avoid arguments as they lead to irreversible breakdown. Give each other space.

Dau Nam

A year for defense. Do not invest heavily or start a business. Focus on studying, self-cultivation, and wait for opportunities at the end of the year or next year.

Career & Success

Stagnant work, no opportunities for promotion. May be slandered by inferior men or isolated. Do not resist fiercely; silently prepare your inner strength.

Wealth & Business

Poor, income is cut or bad debts are hard to collect. Avoid borrowing or lending. Tighten your belt to get through this phase.

Health & Well-being

Easy to contract digestive diseases or experience relapse of chronic illnesses due to a gloomy mood. Relieve the mind through meditation or quiet activities.

Luu Y Dac Biet

When meeting the Pi hexagram, do not lose heart. 'When the extreme is reached, change occurs; change leads to success.' Treat this as a necessary resting phase of the universe to prepare for a new explosion.

Strategic Insights

Risk Analysis

The risk is despair and giving up. If you believe everything is over and start acting negatively, you will miss the opportunity for recovery at the 6th line.

Strategy

If you do the opposite (stubbornly advancing, fighting the times): you will be crushed by the pressure of circumstances. In the Pi hexagram, the strongest is the one who knows how to bow and wait, not the one who runs headfirst into a rock.
