Symbolism & Structure

The Tongren hexagram has Ly (Fire/Clarity) as the lower trigram and Qian (Heaven/Firmness) as the upper. Fire burns brightly under the vast sky, illuminating every corner without shadow. This is the image of a transparent organization where everyone works toward a common goal. The single Yin line at the second position is surrounded and supported by Yang lines, representing a center of unity based on yielding and correctness.

Philosophy & Virtues

The philosophy of the Tongren hexagram teaches: 'Fellowship with men in the open. Success.' Fellowship in the open field (public and large space) brings success. If unity is only kept within a small group for selfish interests, it leads to stagnation. The superior man uses clarity (Ly) and strength (Qian) to overcome barriers of class and status to achieve universal union. Lasting cooperation is built on trust and openness.

1st Line

1st Line: 'Fellowship with men at the gate. No blame.' Unity right at the gate. At the beginning, open your heart to everyone objectively without discrimination. A fair start brings no blame.

2nd Line

2nd Line: 'Fellowship with men in the clan. Humiliation.' Fellowship only within the clan or family. A warning against factionalism and group interest. This local way of working causes regret and narrows your luck.

3rd Line

3rd Line: 'He hides weapons in the thicket; he climbs the high hill. For three years he does not act.' Hiding troops in the thicket, climbing a high hill to observe, unable to act for three years. Due to suspicion, jealousy, and lack of trust in comrades, one remains defensive, leading to stagnation.

4th Line

4th Line: 'He climbs up on his wall; he cannot attack. Good fortune.' Climbing the wall to attack but choosing not to. Knowing when to stop when realizing one is wrong or when a dispute is not worth it. Awakening and returning to righteousness brings good fortune.

5th Line

5th Line: 'Fellowship with men first weep and lament, but afterward they laugh. After great struggles they succeed in meeting.' Companions first weep and then laugh; after great struggles, they meet. Experiencing hardships and fierce battles before finding true empathy. The final outcome is brilliant.

6th Line

6th Line: 'Fellowship with men in the outskirts. No regret.' Fellowship in the distant outskirts. Although not reaching absolute passion, harmony is maintained, no regret.
