Symbolizes observation, vision, self-reflection and setting an example for others. This is the hexagram of tranquility and wisdom.
6-Line Structure
I Ching Interpretation
Symbolism & Structure
The Quan hexagram has the Lower trigram as Khon (Earth/Nhuan), the Upper trigram as Ton (Wind/Penetration). The image of the wind blowing on the ground, going nowhere. The two Yang trenches at the highest position ( trenches 5 and 6 ) act as high platforms to look down at, as well as a model for the Yin trenches below to look up to. This is the state of 'observing' to learn (down looking up) and 'observing' to rule (above looking down).
Philosophy & Virtues
The philosophy of the Quan hexagram teaches that: 'The official, the concubine does not advance, the husband and wife are weak'. Like at the time of worship, when you have washed your hands but have not yet offered the offering, your sincerity is evident, making people admire you. The power of the leader in the Quan hexagram does not lie in acts of power, but in 'profession' - setting an example through virtue. Observe the world to understand the destiny of heaven, observe yourself to cultivate yourself. When the vision is clear, the actions will never be wrong.
Line by Line Analysis
1st Line
Hao So Luc: 'Like an official, a petty person is useless, a gentleman is a fool'. Childish, shallow look. For normal people, it's okay, but for responsible people or gentlemen, it's a pity.
2nd Line
Hao Luc Nhi: 'Qui mandarin, loi nu chanh'. Look through the door. Narrow, one-sided view. Only suitable for small tasks at home, unable to do big tasks or represent the public.
3rd Line
Hao Luc Tam: 'The official is born, evolves'. Observe your own lifestyle to decide whether to move forward or retreat. This is extremely important self-awareness to avoid mistakes of the times.
4th Line
Hao Luc Tu: 'The light of the country, taking advantage of the new witch king'. Observe the splendor of the nation. Understand the essence of an organization to participate and contribute. Very good for finding the owner.
5th Line
Hao Cuu Ngu: 'The official is born, the gentleman is immortal'. Leaders reflect on their own behavior. If we live in the right way and set a good example for others, then there is no mistake. This is the main line of the hexagram.
6th Line
Hao Thuong Cuu: 'An official is born, a gentleman is immortal'. Observe how people live (the results of what you do). Once in the highest position, the view must be comprehensive and objective to adjust the overall situation.
General Discussion
The Guan Hexagram reminds: Before wanting to change the world, observe and understand it clearly. Before you want to teach others, look at yourself in the mirror.

Strategic Insights
Risk Analysis
The risk of the Guan hexagram is 'detachment from reality' or just observing but never taking action (hesitation). Looking too long into the abyss without taking real action will lead to stagnation.
Strategy
If you do the opposite (Act blindly, without observing): You will be like a person walking at night without lights. The Quan Hexagram teaches that action without vision is action that leads to destruction.
