I Ching Interpretation

Symbolism & Structure

The Kien hexagram has the Lower monster as Can (Son/Nght), the Upper monster as Kham (Water/Danger). In front is a deep abyss (Kham), behind is a high mountain (Can). Going forward is dangerous, going back is dangerous. The word 'Kien' means having difficulty walking or being crippled. This is a state where every single individual effort becomes meaningless before the power of circumstances.

Philosophy & Virtues

The philosophy of the Kien hexagram teaches that: 'Kind is beneficial to the southwest, unfavorable to the northeast. Loi saw the great man, virgin sand'. The Southwest is the flat direction (softness), the Northeast is the high mountain direction (hardness). When faced with difficulties, don't try to confront them with rigidity. The gentleman who encounters the Kien hexagram must 'reflect and cultivate virtue' (return to examine himself and cultivate virtue). Difficulties are not meant to destroy you, but to force you to stop, gather your forces and look for people of stature (great men) to lead you through the hardship.

Line by Line Analysis

1st Line

Hao So Luc: 'The past, the future'. Going forward brings difficulties, going back brings praise/joy. This is the wisest advice: If you see danger, stop, don't try to punch and eat sticky rice.

2nd Line

Hao Luc Nhi: 'King Than Kien Kien, Thiep Cung Chi Co'. Servants face many difficulties, not because of personal gain but because of duty. Even though it's hard, staying loyal is not a mistake.

3rd Line

Hao Cuu Tam: 'Returning, returning'. Moving forward is difficult, return to loved ones. Returning now helps you preserve capital and receive support from within.

4th Line

Hao Luc Tu: 'Van Kien, Lai Lien'. Moving forward is difficult, step back to find connections and allies. You cannot cross the abyss alone, you need the coordination of many people.

5th Line

Hao Cuu Ngu: 'Great journey equals future'. In the most difficult times, friends/allies come to help. Thanks to your virtue and righteous position, you are saved from deadlock.

6th Line

Hao Thuong Luc: 'Vang Kien, Lai Thac, auspicious, beneficial to see sir'. Moving forward is difficult, returning will achieve great results. Follow people of great virtue (great men) to rebuild your career.

General Discussion

The Kien hexagram reminds: Turning around is not a failure, but a wise preparation to overcome the abyss.

Divination & Guidance

Facing major obstacles and dilemmas. Absolutely do not take risks or make additional investments. Stop, review your personnel and seek advice from experts.

Morning Advice

An unfavorable day at work, everything gets stuck. Be patient in handling old things, don't start new ones. Avoid long distance travel activities.

Love & Relationships

The relationship is facing major barriers (family, geographical or economic). The more you try to force it, the more it breaks. Take a step back to give both of you time to calm down and think.

Dau Nam

A year of challenges. You will feel like you are climbing a mountain in the rain. The key to success is patience and relying on collective strength.

Career & Success

Deadlocked, no opportunity for advancement. There may be difficulties caused by superiors or the working environment is too harsh. Focus on cultivating your skills and wait for the opportunity in the following hexagrams.

Wealth & Business

Poor, stuck money, bad debt. Avoid borrowing for risky investments because you will not have enough strength to shoulder the risks at this time.

Health & Well-being

Warning about diseases of limbs, bones and joints or circulatory system. You need to walk carefully to avoid accidents and tripping.

Luu Y Dac Biet

When casting the Kien hexagram, remember the saying: 'One step back, the sky is high and the sea is wide'. Don't try to express yourself when circumstances don't allow it.

Strategic Insights

Risk Analysis

The biggest risk is 'recklessness' (moment 1, moat 3). When you consider retreat as humiliating and deliberately rush into the abyss, you will lose everything.

Strategy

If you do the opposite (Accept difficulties to practice): Consider Kien as a test of internal strength. If you are persistent enough to 'reflect and cultivate virtue', when you overcome Kien, you will have a foundation that no one can break.
