Retreat (Dun)
Symbolizes withdrawal, seclusion, and avoidance of conflict when times are not favorable. This is the retreat of the wise, not the retreat of the coward.
6-Line Structure
I Ching Interpretation
Symbolism & Structure
The Don hexagram has the Lower trigram as Can (Son/Stop), the Upper trigram as Can (Thien/Cuong su). The two Yin channels below are growing and pushing the Yang channels upward. This is a statue of a petty man gaining power, a gentleman must step back. Heaven (Can) backs away from Mountain (Can) not because of fear, but because it is the natural law of movement when distance needs to be established.
Philosophy & Virtues
The philosophy of the Don hexagram teaches: 'Dun, hanh, diuresis benefit virginity'. Retreating but still succeeding is because you know when to choose the right time. The gentleman who encounters the Don hexagram must not complain or stubbornly confront the aggressive crowd. 'Far from petty people, not evil' (Stay away from petty people, no need to hate, just maintain a dignified attitude). Retreating now is to prepare for a stronger counterattack in the future. Those who try to punch and eat sticky rice at this time will only bring humiliation.
Line by Line Analysis
1st Line
Hao So Luc: 'Daddy tails, tears. 'Useful belongings'. Retreat at the tail (late). Extremely dangerous because the enemy is close. The advice is to stand still and not do anything major at this time to avoid being noticed.
2nd Line
Hao Luc Nhi: 'Acceptance uses yellow ox's way, moc chi wins the theory'. Maintain the will to retreat like tied with golden cowhide, no one can shake it. Even if you are tempted, you must be steadfast in your decision to stay hidden.
3rd Line
Hao Cuu Tam: 'If the system is confused, there will be trouble, the beast will concubine'. Withdrawn but still bound (like a sick person carrying a burden). There is attachment or debt that gets in the way. Only good for handling household chores, not big tasks.
4th Line
Hao Cuu Tu: 'Being filial, being a gentleman is good, being a petty person'. Retreat happily and voluntarily. The gentleman sees this as an opportunity to rest, so it is good, but the petty man, because of his desire for profit, feels miserable and defeated.
5th Line
Hao Cuu Ngu: 'Gia don, virgin sand'. Retreat well, at the right time and ethically. This is the main line of the hexagram, showing the serenity of someone who has completed their mission and knows how to step back when their reputation is at its peak.
6th Line
Hao Thuong Cuu: 'Flying, no disadvantage'. Retreat like flying, gently escape the circle of radiation. There is nothing binding, nothing unfavorable. The highest realm of freedom.
General Discussion
The Don hexagram reminds: Knowing how to advance is talent, knowing how to retreat is wisdom. Retreating at the right time is an act of protecting the fruits of one's life's labor.
Divination & Guidance
Work & Affairs
New plans should not be made. Work is facing major obstacles from superiors or the market. Find a way to retreat safely and preserve your capital instead of trying to get out of trouble.
Morning Advice
Work quietly, avoid attracting attention or participating in arguments. A good day to 'disappear' from social troubles.
Love & Relationships
There are signs of distance or coldness. Don't try to hold on with pressure. Give each other space to think. A little withdrawal may be the way to save the relationship.
Dau Nam
A year that requires defense and self-preservation. Avoid starting a business or making risky investments. Take time to cultivate, study or go on a retreat.
Career & Success
The office environment is experiencing a lot of upheaval or factional fighting. You should choose to stand aside and not show ambition at this time. 'One step back, the sky is high and the sea is wide'.
Wealth & Business
Least. Money can easily be lost if you stubbornly invest. Hold on tight to what you have. Avoid new projects that promise high profits but pose great risks.
Health & Well-being
Pay attention to rest and restore energy. Health shows signs of deterioration due to overwork. A vacation in a quiet place will be very good for you.
Luu Y Dac Biet
If you cast the Don hexagram, don't feel defeated. Retreat is to prepare for a more brilliant return. Let's step back to observe the big picture more clearly.
Strategic Insights
Risk Analysis
The biggest risk is 'procrastination' (moment 1). When times are forced to retreat and you still regret your rights, you will be caught in a spiral of collapse.
Strategy
If you do the opposite (Stubbornly moving forward): You will become the target of attack by petty people and lose everything you have built. The Hexagram teaches that the truly strong person is the one who knows when not to use force.
