I Ching Interpretation

Symbolism & Structure

The Tan hexagram has the Lower trigram as Khon (Earth/Nhuan), the Upper trigram as Ly (Fire/Clear). Image of the sun (Ly) rising above the ground (Khon). After a long preparation period (in previous hexagrams), this is the time when talent comes to light. In particular, this hexagram shows the gentleness (Khôn) below to support the wisdom (Ly) above, creating a sustainable and favorable advancement.

Philosophy & Virtues

The philosophy of the Tan hexagram teaches: 'Tan, Khang Hau uses the horse to accumulate the second code, stays in the third day'. Meritorious courtiers were rewarded with countless precious horses, and were visited by the king three times in one day. This implies the superiors' absolute trust in talented and virtuous people. The gentleman who meets the Tan hexagram must "self-cultivate wisdom" (clarify his own virtues), constantly practice to be worthy of his new position. However, progress must be based on obedience and integrity, without using tricks.

Line by Line Analysis

1st Line

Hao So Luc: 'Tan Nhu, 摧 Nhu, Trinh Cat. Vuong husband, seducing no casket'. Wanting to move forward but being hindered and shaken. It's good to keep your integrity intact. Even if you are not yet trusted, just relax and be at ease, there will be no mistakes.

2nd Line

Hao Luc Nhi: 'Than like, sad like, pure sand. Receiving the precepts and blessings, Vu Ky Queen Mother'. Moving forward in anxiety and difficulties. If you keep your heart steadfast, you will receive great blessings from your ancestors (royal mother). Perseverance will be rewarded with invisible support.

3rd Line

Hao Luc Tam: 'Long journey, regret'. Supported by everyone. All previous regrets disappeared. This is the stage where a breakthrough begins thanks to collective strength.

4th Line

Hao Cuu Tu: 'Ton Nhu, collect test, keep tears'. Move forward like a dormouse (both greedy and fearful). Warning against those who use evil tricks to climb high. Even if they make progress, they will face danger and be despised.

5th Line

Hao Luc Ngu: 'Regret, loss and survival. No sand, no disadvantage'. Regrets disappear, don't worry about loss or gain. Just move forward confidently and you will encounter good omens, nothing is unfavorable. This is the main line of the hexagram, showing the leader's tolerance.

6th Line

Hao Thuong Cuu: 'Ten is strangely aware, only using and punishing hamlet. The sand is endless, the virgin is cheating'. Go all the way to the horn (climax). Power should only be used for internal rectification. Even if the results are good, being too rigid will lead to embarrassment.

General Discussion

The Tan hexagram reminds: When the opportunity comes, shine brightly like the sun, but keep a gentle mind so as not to be blinded by the halo.

Strategic Insights

Risk Analysis

The biggest risk is 'arrogance' and 'haste'. When things go too well, people easily let down their guard and dominate others (moment 6), leading to jealousy and broken relationships.

Strategy

If you do the opposite (Hide yourself, don't dare to advance): You will miss a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The Tan hexagram teaches that when the sun rises, your job is to shine, not to hide in a cave.
