I Ching Interpretation

Symbolism & Structure

The Thang hexagram has the Lower trigram being Ton (Feng/Wood/Nhuan), the Upper triangular being Khon (Earth/Nhuan). The two gentle hexagrams combined together have the image of a tree (Wood) growing up from the ground (Earth). Unlike the Tan hexagram (promotion as bright as the sun), the Thang hexagram is a gradual advancement, step by step, silently but extremely firmly and strongly.

Philosophy & Virtues

The philosophy of the Thang hexagram teaches: 'Ascension, originality. Loi sees great people, things endure. South conquers the sand'. Promotion is very smooth. Be bold in seeking help from people of status (great people) and don't be afraid. Going to the South (direction of light and action) will bring you luck. The gentleman who meets the Thang hexagram must 'follow virtue, accumulate small things to become great' (follow virtue, accumulate small things to become great). This is the hexagram of the accumulation of small things into great things.

Line by Line Analysis

1st Line

Hao So Luc: 'Doan ascends, great fortune'. Get the trust and support to move forward from the beginning. An extremely favorable start thanks to personal reputation. Great sand.

2nd Line

Hao Cuu Nhi: 'My wife took advantage of the flowers, it's useless'. Have sincere faith. Even a small gift (like the sound of a flute) is enough to move a superior. Success is based on sincerity, not lavish gifts.

3rd Line

Hao Cuu Tam: 'Thang Van Hamlet'. Enter the drum wall. Advancement happened too easily due to not encountering opponents or being too well prepared. However, don't be subjective because of that.

4th Line

Hao Luc Tu: 'The king uses Ky Son's blessings, his luck is boundless'. The kings offered sacrifices at Mount Ky. Recognized by gods and society. Demonstrates a firmly established position.

5th Line

Hao Luc Ngu: 'Virgin sand, promoted'. It's good to keep your integrity strong, moving forward is like stepping on a ladder. Promotion takes place sequentially, according to the process and is very solid. This is the best moat.

6th Line

Hao Thuong Luc: 'Might ascends, benefits are not lost'. Advancing in obscurity (promoting too high or advancing without knowing where to stop). The advice is to remain steadfast in virtue to avoid falling.

General Discussion

The Thang Hexagram reminds: To grow high, the roots must be deep. The most sustainable promotion is promotion that goes hand in hand with moral cultivation.

Strategic Insights

Risk Analysis

The biggest risk is 'losing roots' (moment 6). When you advance too quickly or too high and forget the initial foundation, you will easily be broken by the storm. Additionally, the ease of trench 3 may catch you off guard.

Strategy

If you do the opposite (Stop, don't want to move forward): You will be trampled by those who are going up. The Ascension Hexagram teaches that life is an upward movement, stopping means starting to decline.
