Oppression (Kun)
Symbolizes misery, deadlock, resource depletion and the ultimate test of human will.
6-Line Structure
I Ching Interpretation
Symbolism & Structure
The Hexagram of Misery has the Lower trigram Kham (Water/Danger), the Upper trigram is Doai (Trach/Nhuan). The image of the lagoon water flowing into the deep abyss below, causing the lagoon to dry up. This is a statue of energy and financial loss. Hao Duong is surrounded and obscured by yin, showing that a gentleman is surrounded by petty people, his talent has no place to use martial arts.
Philosophy & Virtues
The philosophy of the Woe hexagram teaches: 'Woe, misfortune, great virginity, good fortune, no end. Unbelievable speech'. In a miserable situation, one can still maintain peace in the soul, that is a great person. When you are being bullied, no one will believe what you say (because you are in a weak position), so don't try to explain or explain. Use actions and silence to demonstrate dignity. Woe is the furnace to refine pure gold; Cowards will fall, talented people will flourish after overcoming it.
Line by Line Analysis
1st Line
Hao So Luc: 'The station goes to Chu Moc, enters Vu U Coc, three years old is impolite'. Sitting on a dry tree stump in a dark valley, three years without seeing light. Warning about despair and giving up when first encountering difficulties. Extremely bad.
2nd Line
Hao Cuu Nhi: 'Woe to drink food and drink, to use food and drink, to take advantage of it, to conquer evil, to have no mercy'. Miserable while eating and drinking well (wealthy but deadlocked in ideals). We need to sincerely pray to the gods instead of enjoying ourselves. Moving forward hastily will bring disaster.
3rd Line
Hao Luc Tam: 'Woe to Vu Thach, keep Vu Thich Le, enter Vu Ky Palace, you won't see anything strange or evil'. Tien tripped over a rock, retreated against a thorn, and returned home without seeing his wife. The situation is completely deadlocked and lonely due to thoughtless actions.
4th Line
Hao Cuu Tu: 'Later slowly, misfortune, misfortune, togetherness'. Arrived slowly because the golden (noble) carriage prevented it. Although there is shame because of lack of decisiveness, in the end there are still results because the mind is oriented towards the good.
5th Line
Hao Cuu Ngu: 'Tie ruoi, miserable vu chi phut, madam is friendly, taking advantage of it'. Having your nose cut off, your feet cut off (punishment/humiliation), being hindered by someone wearing a red shirt. But thanks to sincerity and steadfastness, in the end you will escape trouble and be happy.
6th Line
Hao Thuong Luc: 'Wretched and auspicious to build up, to destroy the land, to write a poem of repentance, to conquer the auspiciousness'. Surrounded by convolvulus vines, standing on an unstable place. If you know how to repent and act courageously to escape, you will have good luck. Misery has come to an end.
General Discussion
The Misery Hexagram reminds: When material resources are exhausted, the spirit must prosper. The person who dies in the Woe hexagram is the one who lets his mind be 'woe' before his body is 'woe'.
Divination & Guidance
Work & Affairs
Very difficult. Money is running out, resources are cut off. Don't try to explain yourself or ask for help verbally. Let's endure silently, cut costs as much as possible and wait for the opportunity to return.
Morning Advice
A dead end day at work, feeling like no one understands you. Work less, take time to reflect and cultivate your mind. Avoid meetings that require convincing others.
Love & Relationships
The relationship is in a stage of emotional poverty or economic hardship. Two people easily quarrel due to life pressure. We need solidarity and suffering instead of blaming each other.
Dau Nam
A year of austerity. You will face major financial and reputational challenges. Consider this a year to 'repay debt' to the past and practice bravery.
Career & Success
Work is stagnant, there is no source of income or being isolated by superiors. May be unfairly reputed. Don't give up, do your job as quietly as possible.
Wealth & Business
Exhausted. It's easy to fall into debt or bankruptcy if you don't know how to manage it. Absolutely do not make risky investments or borrow more at this time.
Health & Well-being
Warning of serious physical weakness due to anxiety and malnutrition. Pay attention to diseases of the blood, kidneys or respiratory system. Need to rest and nourish immediately.
Luu Y Dac Biet
Casting the Woe hexagram, the key word is 'Silence'. The more you say the wrong thing, the more you struggle, the more confused you become. Keep your integrity like pure gold in a red fire.
Strategic Insights
Risk Analysis
The biggest risks are 'despair' (moment 1) and 'self-pity'. When you lose faith in yourself, you will truly become miserable with no way out.
Strategy
If you do the opposite (Still lavish, not accepting reality): You will collapse faster. The Misery Hexagram teaches that you must know how to 'shrink' at the right time to preserve your life and personality.
