Symbolism & Structure

The Cach hexagram has the Lower trigram Ly (Fire/Clarity), the Upper trigram is Doai (Trach/Nhuen/Joy). The fire wants to burn, the water wants to engulf. These two forces cannot be reconciled, forcing a 'Revolution' to establish a new order. The word 'Cach' also means an animal skin that has been stripped of its hair and tanned thoroughly, signifying a change in its internal nature.

Philosophy & Virtues

The philosophy of the Cach hexagram teaches that: 'The way, the day of the wife, the original success, the benefit of virginity, the regret of death'. The revolution must wait until the time is ripe (di day) and gain the trust of the people (phu), then it will be successful and have no regrets. The gentleman who meets the Cach hexagram must 'rule the calendar' (rearrange the calendar and clarify the times). Change must not be hasty, it must be wise (Ly) and bring joy (Doai) to the many.

Line by Line Analysis

1st Line

Hao So Cuu: 'Strengthening the method of yellow ox'. Fastened with yellow cowhide. At the beginning of the reform intention, the force was not enough and the people's hearts did not follow, so we kept ourselves steady and did not take action.

2nd Line

Hao Luc Nhi: 'What is the difference between a mother's birthday and auspiciousness? It's best to wait until the last day to carry out reforms. This is a loyal line, signaling that the time to act has come, moving forward will bring good luck.

3rd Line

Hao Cuu Tam: 'Confidence, innocence, proverb three achievements, husband and wife'. Rushing forward is cruel. It must be discussed, discussed and recalculated three times (three achievements), only when everyone believes it will be done.

4th Line

Hao Cuu Tu: 'Regret, husband and wife change their fate, good luck'. Regret disappears, there is confidence to change orders. The revolutionary implementation phase was successful thanks to determination and support.

5th Line

Hao Cuu Ngu: 'The great man has changed, the possessive husband'. The great man changes like a tiger's stripes (clear and majestic). You don't need a fortune teller to know that you have faith. This is a radical reform from the top level.

6th Line

Hao Thuong Luc: 'A gentleman reports change, a petty person has a face, conquers evil, and stays away'. A gentleman changes like a leopard's stripes (subtlety), a petty person only changes his face (outward obedience). The reform is over, don't be greedy anymore, just stay still and maintain the results.

Hexagram reminds: Revolution is only successful when it is enlightened by wisdom and carried out when the people's hearts are ready.
