Symbolism & Structure

The Lu hexagram has the Lower trigram as Can (Son/Nghang), the Upper triangular as Ly (Fire/Clear). The fire (Ly) passed through the mountain (Can) and then disappeared. Passersby (passengers) only stop temporarily and then continue on. Because there is no solid foundation in the locality, travelers must use wisdom to respond and silence to avoid trouble.

Philosophy & Virtues

The philosophy of the Lu hexagram teaches: 'Lu, Tieu Hanh, Lu Tinh Cat'. Customers only want small things to go smoothly, and maintaining integrity is good. The gentleman who meets the Lu hexagram must 'use the punishment wisely and not stay in prison' (be wise and cautious when punishing, do not let the lawsuit drag on). When in the position of a newcomer or a stranger, absolutely do not be arrogant or aggressive. The key to survival and success when 'going away' is humility and careful observation of the laws of the place you go to.

Line by Line Analysis

1st Line

Hao So Luc: 'Lu spreads the light, the fourth quarter holds the ear'. The guest is petty and narrow-minded, only worrying about taking care of small things. He brought disaster upon himself and the contempt of the natives.

2nd Line

Hao Luc Nhi: 'Lu is the second, nostalgic for the fourth, has achieved the same level of virginity, good luck'. The guest found a good place to stay, enough money and a loyal maid. Thanks to humility and good preparation, you will be lucky.

3rd Line

Hao Cuu Tam: 'Lu part is the second, the funeral is the same servant, the virgin'. The inn burned down, losing all the maids. Due to a hot-tempered and arrogant personality, relationships are ruined and they fall into misery.

4th Line

Hao Cuu Tu: 'If you treat Lu Vu, you will reach a private residence, and your ego will not be happy'. The guest is temporarily stable, has money and a defense tool (ax). However, the soul still does not feel happy because this is not where it belongs.

5th Line

Hao Luc Ngu: 'The hemorrhoid shoots, in one fell swoop, it is destined to die'. Shooting a pheasant, losing an arrow but in the end was praised and given a title. Your efforts to skillfully adapt will help you gain favor with the locals.

6th Line

Hao Thuong Cuu: 'The bird is strange, the traveler is smiling and the queen is peach. The burial of a cow is strange and cruel. The bird's nest was burned. The guest at first laughed heartily, then cried. Lost cows at the border. Warning of strangers' extravagance leading to loss of everything.

General Discussion

Hexagram Lu reminds: When you are a stranger in a new group, humility is the strongest shield. Those who boast in a foreign land are those who seek their own death.
