6-Line Structure
I Ching Interpretation
Symbolism & Structure
The Tieu Qua hexagram has the Lower trigram Can (Son/Nght), Upper triangular Chan (Thunder/Dynamo). Structure: 4 Yin lines surround 2 Yang lines in the middle, like a flying bird. The word 'Too' means to exceed, 'Tieu Qua' means to exceed a little. During this period, Yin (soft, small) is stronger than Yang (hard, big).
Philosophy & Virtues
The philosophy of the Tieu Qua hexagram teaches: 'The small too, the good, the beneficial. Can be a small thing, can't be a big thing. The sound of flying birds, no doubt on top, doubt on bottom, great auspiciousness'. Like a bird flying, one should not fly high (arrogance) but should lower to the ground (humility) to be great. A gentleman who encounters this hexagram must: 'Happiness is too harsh, mourning is too harsh, use is too frugal' (Behavior should be too modest, funerals should be too sad, spending should be too frugal). This 'too much' is not a mistake, but an adjustment to compensate for the shortcomings of the times.
Line by Line Analysis
1st Line
Hao So Luc: 'Birds are ferocious'. Birds fly too high and get into trouble. When you first start, if you want to do big things and show off your talent, you will fail miserably.
2nd Line
Hao Luc Nhi: 'Too strange ancestor, met strange sister; Inadequate king, enlightened miracle god, boundless'. Passing my grandfather to meet my grandmother, I did not meet the king but met a minister. The idea is to be content with intermediate results, not to be overly ambitious.
3rd Line
Hao Cuu Tam: 'Too much of protection, or too much to harm, is cruel'. Not knowing how to guard against the excesses of others or yourself can lead to being harmed by bad people. Very dangerous.
4th Line
Hao Cuu Tu: 'There is no such thing as enlightenment, passing away all precepts, things are eternal'. There is no mistake if you know how to restrain your strength (Yang) to adapt to the situation (Yin). Moving forward will be dangerous, so keep your integrity and stand still.
5th Line
Hao Luc Ngu: 'The cloud does not dance, the ego meets the west. Gong succulent and succubus at the acupuncture point'. Dense clouds without rain from the west. Must go into the cave to catch prey. Representing the deadlock of the great situation, small matters can only be resolved with meticulousness.
6th Line
Hao Thuong Luc: 'It's all about being happy, it's about flying and flying apart, it's fierce, it's a disaster.' Refusing to stop but exceeding the allowed limit, like a bird flying straight into the net. The terrible ending is due to the arrogance that doesn't know when to stop.
General Discussion
The Tieu Qua hexagram reminds: When times do not allow being a hero, be a kind and careful ordinary person.
